all about emeralds

Celebrate each season with its associated gemstones. This is another great way to select a gift or your own gemstone jewelry!

Spring Gems

Known as the gem of eternal spring and youth, the vibrant green emerald is the perfect springtime gemstone. This gem has long been known as a symbol of love and rebirth. Other gorgeous representations of spring include amethyst, pink topaz and peridot.

Summer Gems

Symbolizing passion and heat, the fiery red ruby is an ideal summer gemstone choice. The ruby is the birthstone for the month of July and is known as the “king of precious stones”. Summer’s bounty and heat is also well represented in the garnet, zircon and alexandrite.

Autumn Gems

Autumn is a time of harvest. The blue fall sky and the hope that new harvest brings is embodied in the bright sapphire gemstone. Hyacinth, topaz and tourmaline are also excellent choices for fall gemstone selection.

Winter Gems

Wintertime sparkles with the classic diamond gemstone. Bright and full of light, the diamond symbolizes ice and snow. Other fine choices are the winter gemstones turquoise and pearl.

Cubic zirconia is a stellar diamond substitute. Because it’s hard and sparkly, cubic zirconia is great for those who don’t want to buy a pricey diamond.

Even better, now they’re making cubic zirconia (CZ) in a bunch of colors so we can buy cubic zirconia instead of emeralds, rubies, sapphires or other mind-blowingly expensive rocks.

What’s the Difference: Cubic Zirconia vs. Fancy Gemstones

There are lots of differences between the pricey gemstones and cubic zirconia. This isn’t a bad thing though. Take diamonds for example. Cubic zirconia looks almost perfect and diamonds have flaws making cubic zirconia way more intense than diamonds or other fancy stones. That said, don’t pretend your wearing a diamond when it’s really a cubic zirconia because you’ll embarrass yourself. Even though cubic zirconia and diamonds are both colorless, they don’t look alike. You can tell if someone is wearing a cubic zirconia or a diamond. The same applies for colored cubic zirconia. If you’re wearing a green cubic zirconia ring, don’t expect it to look like emerald. Most likely, the cubic zirconia will be brighter and prettier.

Personally, I love cubic zirconia. Just think, we can buy affordable cubic zirconia jewelry that’s prettier than the real thing!

Now you all know I’m a great lover of jewelry and gemstones. In fact, it could be argued that I am one of the greatest lovers….of gemstones.

That said, despite my great love of gemstones, I’ve never actually dreamt about them. Of course, there’s always a first. Last night was my first time dreaming about gemstones.

Dreaming about gemstones is sexy!

As I dreamed I found myself at a fabulous gala engagement with a beautiful unnamed Italian. I was wearing a full-length strapless glimmering with gemstones. There were gemstones adorning my hair, my arms, my neck (it was magnificent!), gemstones embedded in the floor, the walls, the soaring ceiling. The orchestra was playing; their instruments made entirely of gemstones. All the other women looked amazing also, bejeweled head to foot with gemstones.

The unnamed Italian and I floated about the ballroom as servers passed by carrying trays of champagne glasses filled, not with bubbly, but with gemstones: garnet, diamond, emerald, rubies, you name it. Gemstones everywhere!

As the music played, as talk and laughter echoed off gemstone walls, the beautiful Italian took my hand and led me to a hidden atrium where we sat on a dazzling gemstone bench. Suddenly it began to rain gemstones, rain and rain and rain, beautiful, perfect gemstones. There were gemstones in my lap, my hands, everywhere, everywhere gemstones!

The beautiful Italian leaned into me, gemstones raining around us when….

Damn!

I woke up!

-Summer

Treasured by many cultures across the globe for more than 4,000 years, the rich green emerald has long been associated with springtime and rebirth. As a springtime gem, the emerald has come to symbolize youth, happiness and fertility. It is also said to grant its wearer the gift of eloquence. Today, it is scientifically recognized that the human eye is most sensitive to the color green. So, the emerald features a soothing hue that is easily complemented by other colors.

Emeralds in History

Cleopatra may have dropped her pearls into wine for Marc Antony, but she held her emeralds far more precious. The oldest emerald mines, dated by archeologists at 1650 BC are located near the Red Sea and known as Cleopatra’s mines. Also in Ancient Egypt, the dead were mummified with emeralds carved with symbols of eternal life.
In Ancient Rome, the emperor Nero was said to have watched the gladiator battles while wearing emerald sunglasses! During the reign of the Mughal Empire in India between 1526 and 1857, emeralds were carved with sacred text. The gemstone was then worn to bring luck and protection to its wearer. The Incans and Aztecs believed the emerald to be a holy gemstone.

Origins and Presentation

Emeralds are commonly mined in Columbia, Zambia, Brazil and Pakistan. Although fine emeralds are most often found in Columbia, there is no guarantee of quality regardless of country of origin.
Extremely durable, top quality emeralds can be even more valuable than diamonds. Their hardness makes them less susceptible to scratches but quite difficult to cut. Most often cut in a rectangular step-cut, this shape is now popularly known as the emerald cut.
