The Watch You Want

There are so many options out there when it comes to buying a watch.  Do you want a wristwatch or a pendant watch, a pocket watch or a keychain watch?  Do you prefer square, round or oval watch faces?  Large or small?  Whatever type of watch you’re looking to buy, here’s some information to help you make your decision.

Your Watch: Quartz or Mechanical

Because of their accuracy, quartz watches are the most common type of watches.  Because you won’t have to wind your watch if you buy a quartz, they’re the most user friendly too.  You can buy an analog, digital or anidigi watch.  Whereas a digital display face presents the time digitally and the analog face has a traditional circular presentation of numbers, an anidigi watch face has both.

Mechanical watches have their benefits too.  They are beautifully crafted objects.  Although, traditionally, mechanical watches had to be wound, automatic mechanical watches are now available.  These watches wind themselves as long as they are kept in motion (you will have to wear your watch or wind it).  Of course you can still buy a mechanical manual watch if you like.  Though these require daily winding, they certainly make a statement.

Watch Bands

There are many different watch bands to choose from including gold, silver and platinum, aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, leather, plastic and rubber among others.  Whatever your preference, remember that if you buy a watch face you like with a plastic or leather band, you can always switch the band with one you love!

Watch Extras

There are lots of little extras a watch may have.  Some watches have calendars which display the day and date whereas others may display the month as well.  Chronographs act as a stopwatch whereas a tachymeter scale measures average speed.  You can buy a watch with a moonphase indicator which will show you the phase of the moon on the face of your watch, or have your watch chime the time with a repeater when you press a button.  A tourbillon reduces potential errors in time, a telemeter scale measures the distance between visual and auditory occurrences (such as the distance between a gunshot and lightening), and a world time watch will tell you the time all over the world.  Of course, don’t forget water resistance.  These days you can buy a watch that is water resistant up to 200 meters!  With all these options, pick the ones that are most important to you and start shopping!

Caring for Your Watch

Here are a few tips to keep your watch ticking:

• Watch the temperature: Never leave your watch in extreme hot or cold temperatures.
• Don’t expose your quartz watch to magnets.
• Clean your watch regularly!
• Take your watch in every 3 to 5 years for a check-up!
